OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes hosted a season opening quadrangular on Tuesday in High School wrestling. Kindred, Lisbon, and LaMoure/Litchville Marion were in town for three duals each.
In round one, Oakes beat Kindred 66-6 The Tornadoes jumped out to a 24-0 lead by winning the first five weights. At 106, Case Awender pinned Gabe Whipple in 3:06. Noah Wood defeated Zander Swenson 8-4 at 113. After forfeits at 120 and 126, Ty Awender slipped past Tyson Johnson 2-1 at 132.
Kindred won it only bout at 136 when Carter Schmitz won by fall over John German in 1:11. The Tornadoes got forfeit at 145 and 152.
Blayson Dolney clinched the dual for the Tornadoes with a pin of Rodney Wolf in 31 seconds at 160 to make it 42-6 Oakes.
Joshua Meehl and Joe Schaefer each won by pin. Meehl at 170 and Schaefer at 195.
Oakes won by forfeit at 182 and 285 and there was a double forfeit at 220.
In the second round, the Tornadoes ran into defending state champion Lisbon and the Broncos won 13 weight classes, 9 by fall in a 69 to 6 win. The only Oakes win came at 285 when Jacob Hankel pinned Grant Lyons in 1:27.
For Lisbon, Jordan Dick, Blaze Reinke, Carter Wallner, Simon Sveum, Boeden Greenley, Jaden Schmidt, Hunter Schultz, Jordan Sours, and Gabe Lyons all won by forfeit. Lisbon received a forfeit at 220.
The final match of the day was the best of the day. Oakes defeated LaMoure/Litchville-Marion 42-36.
Oakes led 24-0 early after pins by Granr Wagner at 120, Jacob Kadoun at 126, and Ty Awender at 132 and a forfeit at 136.
The Loboes came back and won the next seven weights beginning with Lukas Hoff with a pin of Tate Thorpe at 145. Brayden Steffes beat Landon Ptacek 7-3 to make it 24-9 Oakes. Andrew Hoff defeated Blayson Dolney 8-3 to cut the Tornado lead to 24-12. Garrett Hebl pinned Joshua Meehl at 170 and Brett Wendel pinned Marc Seyer at 182 to tie the match at 24. Brock Wendel gave the Loboes the lead 30 to 24 with a pin of Joe Schaefer at 195. Wyatt Weight won by forfeit at 220 to make it 36-30 Loboes.
The Tornadoes tied the match at 36 when Jacob Hankel pinned Zachary Lahlum at 285. Case Awender and Jackson Sorum won by forfeits at 106 and 113 respectively to end the match.
Oakes will be at the LaMoure Invitaional this Saturday.
