Phyllis Ann Miller was born on December 27, 1961 in Valley City to John and Dorothy (Sherman) Miller.  She grew up in the Oriska, ND area and graduated in 1980 from Oriska High School. Throughout her life, Phyllis was a caregiver.  She started early on by caring for her brother, Arnie.  When she and Arnie moved into Valley City and he began activities with the Open Door Center, she worked various jobs in the community.  She found a special place in her heart for the Sisters at Maryvale Convent when she worked there and always spoke fondly of them and her time with them.

After her marriage to Kevin McDonough in July of 2008, she began working at Valley City State University.

She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Oriska and enjoyed passing the time doing crochet or playing solitare.

Phyllis is survived by her siblings, Mitch (Sandy) Miller of Leal, ND, Harvey (Donna) Miller of Fargo, ND, Kenny (Rose) Miller of Elk River, MN, Helen Johnson of Valley City, ND, Ray Miller of Tower City, ND, Fr. Jake Miller of Edgeley, ND, Gay (Ralph) Anderson of Wimbledon, ND, Gayle Halland of Oriska, ND, Cliff Miller of Dazey, ND, and Larry Miller of Page, ND.

Although she didn’t have children of her own, she leaves behind her special nieces and nephews.  She was known to torment them when they would come to the farm to visit, but they loved it and always came back for more.  They were very dear to her as she was to them.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Melvin, Marvin, and Arnie Miller; brothers-in-law, Dan Halland, Don Johnson; and sister-in-law, Carol Miller.

Lerud Mathias Funeral Home in Valley City is assisting Phyllis’ family with arrangements.
