VALLEY CITY, N.D. (SVCF) – The Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation is happy to announce the recipients of their 2020 Community Grant Round. Thanks to generous donors and a successful fundraising event last fall we were able to award $24,700 to nine nonprofits in Barnes County. Four of the nonprofits received funding through two donor advised funds.
Joe & Kim Burns Family established a Donor Advised Fund to support the needs of local first responders and utilized the 2020 Community Grant Round to determine their awards. Their fund awarded grants to the Hastings Rural Fire Department and Kathryn Fire Department.
Hastings Rural Fire Department was awarded $2,375 to assist the Fire Department in purchasing a 4- wheel drive pumper truck. There is a strong need to upgrade their current pumper truck as it cannot effectively be used on grass fires leaving rural areas vulnerable. Karl Helland, Hastings Rural Fire Chief says, “Our Fire Department is thankful for the generosity that directly affects our rural community. Being a very small, rural fire department with limited sources of income, this grant allows us the ability to purchase a vehicle that serves our community and rural area to the fullest capabilities.”
Kathryn Fire Department was awarded $2,375 to purchase an extractor machine. This is a commercial washing machine that meets specific NFPA standards to ensure proper cleaning is achieved to remove carcinogens yet still be safe on the expensive PPE gear. “We have been working the last four years to become more compliant with achievable safety and firefighting standards. We are grateful for opportunities like this to help achieve those goals.” Eric Nelson, Kathryn Fire Department.
George and Audrey Gaukler Family Foundation also awarded funds through the Community Grant Round to the Abused Persons Outreach Center and Education Foundation for VCPS.
Abused Persons Outreach Center was awarded $5,000 to support direct services provided to meet the immediate needs of victims and their children of domestic violence and sexual assault. “We can’t thank the Foundation enough.” Said Kasey Skalicky, Director of APOC. “Your support creates opportunities for victims, survivors and their children at a time when many feel they have limited or no options.”
Education Foundation for VCPS- Access For All Program received $5,000 to support onsite school-based-mental health services to the students of Valley City Public School. The Access for All Program provides school-based behavioral health counseling services 3 days per week to the students of Valley City Public Schools. “We thank the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation for the generous support. The funds that they have provided us for the Access for All Program has made a tremendous difference in our ability to provide these services.” Said Shari Larson, Education Foundation for VCPS.
