JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – According to the National Farmers Union, farmers and ranchers receive only 14.6 cents of every dollar consumers spend on food at home and away from home.

To help raise awareness and promote fair market shares, the Stutsman County Farmers Union will be holding a Farmer’s Share event in Jamestown on October 1st.

Member Amanda McClean says the reason behind this event is to raise awareness for those who don’t work in the ag industry and promote better flexibility for farmers and ranchers.

Roughly 80% of the meat processing is done by four meat processing companies in the world and member JP Lueck says this didn’t help local farmers. Especially during the pandemic.

McClean added that even if local beef was being sold, the amount the local farmer or rancher makes is minimal.

It’s estimated that for 1 pound of Top Sirloin at a retail price of $9.99, the farmer or rancher who sold that beef would only receiving $1.56 with the rest going towards processing or to that store.

McClean says to add to that, those going to local butchers and processors were experiencing even longer delays.

Lueck says if you want to support your local farmers and ranchers and call for fair market shares, contact your state and local representatives.

The Farmers Share Taco in a Bag drive up event will be held from 11 AM to 1 PM at the North Dakota Farmers Union offices in Jamestown on October 1st. The cost for each meal is the “farmers share” or free-will donation.
