VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Barnes County Commission unanimously passed a motion to reduce the total construction cost of the new jail during their August 18th meeting. At that time, the commission agreed to eliminate the new law enforcement center from the project.

According to the contractor, Adolfson & Peterson Construction, that move lowered the total Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for construction of the new jail now under construction along the I-94 frontage road in Valley City. The new cost figures are attached below along with the city building permit.

Meanwhile, Terry Brock is leading an effort to protest the commission’s decision to build a new jail. He said during his petition drive there was overwhelming support not to build a new jail. He said elderly people informed him that they cannot afford anymore taxes. Farmers told him that they have all the obligations they can handle and don’t need more. Brock said the “Stop the Jail Committee” presented their protest petition to the Barnes County Auditor on August 21st. On Tuesday, September 1st the commission will discuss the protest petition during their regular meeting at 8am. The latest cost estimate figures for the new jail under construction are listed below.
