VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Reed Butz did all he could to help the Valley City Saints win but in the end the defense committed five errors, two in the top of the 10th inning as the Jamestown Elks downed the Saints 5-4 Sunday night at Charlie Brown Field.
The Elks scored four runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Braxton Hewitt and a two run single by Matt Meraz
The Saints chipped away at the lead with two runs in the third on an error and a Reed Butz rbi single. They would add another run in the fifth on another Butz rbi single and then sent the game to extra innings when Andrew Schaan drove in Butz with a two-out rbi single.
But the Elks would plate an unearned run in the top of the tenth to pull out the win.
Butz was 4 for 5 with a run and two rbi for Valley City. Carlos Turpo and Brady Engebretson had two hits each. Turpo also scored twice.
Butz went eight innings on the mound. He allowed four hits,four unearned runs with five walks and 12 strike outs. Engebretson took the loss yielding two hits and one unearned run in two innings. He did not walk a batter and fanned two.
Valley City falls to 4-9-1 on the year. Next up for the Saints, they travel to Enderlin to play the Indies Wednesday night at 7pm.
