JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Roosevelt Elementary 1st Grader Aubrey Blackmore knew when COVID-19 closed schools in North Dakota, all of the students were being affected.
So, she had an idea to get all of the students at her school the gift of a book. Aubrey’s mother and Roosevelt teacher Mindy Blackmore says the idea started on a much grander scale before becoming what it is now.
Aubrey originally had an idea to collect money to purchase books and wanted to set up outside to collect money.
Instead, Blackmore says she and Aubrey sat down and wrote a script for a video to ask for donations so she could buy books. The video was posted to Facebook and it didn’t take long for Aubrey’s idea to spread.
Now, Aubrey’s goal has grown to purchase a book for all students in the five public elementary schools in Jamestown. Aubrey says books were the perfect thing to get other kids in the school district.
Because the venture has grown so much, Blackmore says they are still accepting donations to purchase the Scholastic books for students in Jamestown. She says they currently have enough for students in at least 3 of the 5 public elementary schools.
Blackmore says the response is greater than any of them could have imagined.
