basketball-2-2

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Two semifinal games and one elimination game packed day two of the District 5 Girls Basketball Tournament at the Jamestown Civic Center Saturday evening.

Here are the results from the games:

Ellendale 54, Barnes County North 30 (Elimination Game)

A combined 48 turnovers graced the lone elimination game of Saturday’s action.

The two teams started out on similar trajectory’s. Both struggled hanging on to the ball and shooting from the field, but Ellendale caught fire at the end of the first half. The Cardinals used a 28-3 run from the second quarter into the third quarter to pull away from Barnes County North.

Free throw shooting propelled the Ellendale run. As a team, the Cardinals had 31 free throw attempts in the game, making 16 of them. With an injury in the 3rd quarter and three Bison players fouling out, Barnes County North had just three players on the floor for the final seconds of the defeat.

Ellendale’s Sarah Young was the game’s leading scorer with 15 points. Young had 13 of those in the first half and connected on three 3-pointers.

Barnes County North was led by Courtnie Fick with eight.

Carrington 55, Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 31 (Semifinal)

With a night off during the first round of the District 5 Tournament, Carrington showed no rust getting back to the court during Saturday’s 24 point victory over EKM.

Carrington came out on fire in the first half. As a team the Cardinals shot 52 percent from the field, hit almost half of their three point attempts (7 of 15), and went 5 of 6 at the free throw line en route to a 38 point first half. EKM had a decent first half as well going 32 percent from the field, 4 of 5 from outside the arc and 3 of 5 at the free throw line, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the red hot Cardinals.

The second half cooled off both teams. Carrington scored just 17 points and EKM shot below 20 percent from the field.

Carrington’s Kiera Eli was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points and four makes from long range. EKM’s Jocelynn Madcke went off in the first half hitting all four of her 3-point attempts and finished with a team high 13 points.

LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 55, Oakes 43

For a fourth consecutive time, the LaMoure-Litchville/Marion Loboes (LLM) defeated Oakes and will play for a second consecutive District Championship.

Oakes jumped on top early and led by five early on, but LLM snatched the lead thanks to a dynamic performance from senior Ellie Holen and sophomore Molly Musland. The combination of Holen and Musland combined for 27 of the 29 first half points, (93 percent of the team’s scoring) and combined for 40 of the 55 total team points (73 percent).

On the other side, Oakes slogged through some scoring droughts but made it a two possession game in the fourth quarter. Senior Jaida Seyer poured in a phenomenal second half scoring 13 points on a 5 of 9 performance from the field. Seyer finished as Oakes’ leading scorer with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough. After missing Friday night’s game with an ankle injury, Oakes senior Nicole Schmitz had a tough go of it Saturday going 0-8 from the floor and finishing scoreless.

LLM’s leading scorer was Musland with 23 points.

The District 5 Championship is set for Monday night. It’s a repeat of last year’s title game. Carrington will take on LLM at 7:30 following the two Region 3 qualifiers.
