JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The first day of the 2020 District 5 Girls Basketball Tourney featured a couple lopsided wins and a back-and-forth contest highlighting Friday’s action.

Here are the results from the first round:

Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 46, Midkota 38

The first game of the day was the best and most competitive action of the first round. Both teams came out of the gate and scored on their first two possessions and exchanged first quarter blows throughout. There were four lead changes and three ties by the end of the first frame.

Foul trouble plagued Midkota in the first half. Three starters had multiple fouls and their leading scorer Tara Otto picked up three. Despite the fouls, Midkota trailed by just four at the halfway point.

But the lead ballooned to begin the 3rd quarter. EKM sprinted out of the second half gate on an 8-0 run spurred by Sr. Maren Berntson with six of the eight points. Berntson finished the night with an 18 point, 15 rebound double-double.

After falling behind to begin the third quarter, Midkota couldn’t claw their way back into and lost by eight. Midkota’s leading scorer was Brenna Anderson with 17 and 13 of those coming in the second half.

EKM will take on Carrington today at 6:00 in the semifinals and Midkota will get the day off and play in a region qualifier Monday.

(RV) LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 70, Ellendale 32

Ellendale began the game on a 4-0 run but didn’t have much to cheer about after the first couple minutes. LLM’s pressure defense kicked it into high gear and forced 27 Ellendale turnovers on their way to an easy first round victory.

The Loboes smothering defense led to a huge 34-4 advantage in the points off turnovers department. Easy transition baskets and open looks also produced a 53 percent shooting clip from the field and produced over 1.27 points per possession.

Sr. Kaylynn Siedschlag was the leading scorer with 18 points followed by Sr. Molly Musland with 13 and Sr. Ellie Holen with 11. Ellendale didn’t have a scorer in double-digits. Chloe Bollinger was the leading scorer with six points.

LLM advances to Saturday’s semifinals to play Oakes, and Ellendale drops to an elimination game at 4:30 against Barnes County North Saturday.

Oakes 63, Barnes County North 19

After a quarter, the scoreboard looked like a football game at the Jamestown Civic Center in Friday’s nightcap. Oakes jumped out to a 21-0 lead.

The run carried into the second quarter and Oakes finished it out on a 32-2 run halfway through the second quarter. It wasn’t a great shooting performance from Oakes in the first half, but Oakes got to the free throw line often outscoring BCN 12-0 in the first half at the line. Points off turnovers was the second factor. Oakes held a 15-0 advantage in that category and cruised to an easy 44 point win in the second half.

Oakes gets a rematch with LaMoure-Litchville/Marion after dropping the first meeting. BCN greets Ellendale in an elimination game today at 4:30.
