ENDERLIN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes boys basketball team (8-6) fell behind big in the first half, but battled back down 20 to make it a 12 point game roughly halfway through the 3rd quarter.
Then the seventh ranked Enderlin Eagles (14-1) erupted and won 85-47.
It was a near perfect night for the Enderlin Eagles on offense. Led by Joe Hurlburt, who scored his 1,000th career point, Enderlin’s attack was balanced, methodical, efficient and overwhelming in the near 40 point victory. The Eagles scored no less than 18 points in each of the four quarters and produced a 27 point 3rd quarter for the cherry on top.
The well-oiled machine was pushed along by the outside shot. Enderlin shooters connected on 14 threes, five of them came in the fourth quarter, and six different shooters hit a trey.
Oakes won the 2nd quarter 20-18, but the discrepancies in the other three quarters were too much to overcome without some key players. Alex Muggli missed the game with a knee injury and Dalton Nelson is more likely than not shut down for the remainder of the season according to coach Nolen Peterson.
The Enderlin rim protectors of Hurlburt and Carson Bartholomay created havoc in the paint blocking numerous shots making it a tough challenge for the Oakes scorers.
Despite the tough loss, Garret Meehl still scored a team high 21 points with a season high four made three pointers against the talented Eagles.
Oakes will put the out-of-region loss behind them and take on district foes Carrington on Tuesday. Coverage can be heard on KDDR and on newsdakota.com.
