GRAND FORKS, N.D. – More than 20 Valley City State University student-athletes set personal records Saturday as the Viking track and field team competed at the UND Open in Grand Forks, N.D.

Headlining the meet Saturday for the Vikings was a new national-qualifying performance from Zachary Co and a monster school record by Bryeann Robertson.

Robertson won the women’s shot put Saturday and shattered her own school record in the process with a throw of 14.19 meters (46 feet, 6.75 inches). That broke her own school record of 44 feet, 4 inches – which she set last week – by more than two feet and is the second-best throw in the entire NAIA this season.

In the men’s shot put, Co hit the NAIA “B” National Qualifying Standard with a top throw of 15.66 meters (51 feet, 4.5 inches). That placed him second at the meet on Saturday. It is the second event that Co has qualified in this season after meeting the NAIA “B” Standard in the weight throw last week.

The Vikings had 22 Top 6 finishes at the UND Open, which featured a variety of NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III and NAIA schools. On Friday night, the meet had an indoor discus throw event. VCSU’s Garret Roemmich placed second in that event with a mark of 43.11 meters.

VCSU freshman Kyley Lauf placed second in the women’s 600 meter run, crossing the line in a time of 1:46.28. Brooke Malsom had a strong showing in the women’s long jump with a personal record distance of 5.02 meters (16 feet, 5.75 inches). That placed her fourth at the meet but is the top long jump distance in the North Star Athletic Association so far this season. Macy Dimler ran a season-best time of 9.67 in the 60-meter hurdle prelims and placed 6th in the finals.

Konnor Stueve had a pair of Top 6 finishes and two new personal records Saturday. The junior placed fifth in the men’s 60 meter dash (7.23) and sixth in the 200 meter dash (23.10).

In the men’s weight throw, Roemmich and Co placed fourth and fifth respectively and both surpassed the NAIA “B” Standard – which they had already reached last week. Roemmich set a new PR with his top toss off 16.57 meters.

Up next: The Vikings are in action next weekend at the Bison Open hosted by North Dakota State University on Feb. 7-8.
