MOORHEAD, MINN. – The Valley City State University track and field team set two school records and had three athletes hit national qualifying marks Saturday at the Concordia College Cobber Open.
The Vikings also won six events at the meet, which was VCSU’s second indoor competition of the season.
Bryeann Robertson set a new school record in the women’s shot put, winning the event Saturday with a top mark of 13.51 meters (44 feet, 4 inches). Robertson’s throw broke the old school record of 13.39 meters (43-11.25) set by Seri Geisler in 2017. Robertson’s 13.51 meter throw on Saturday also hit the NAIA National Qualifying “A” Standard (13.45 meters) and ranks her ninth in the nation.
Viking throwers dominated the men’s weight throw, taking the top three spots and four of the top five on Saturday. VCSU’s Zachary Co and Garret Roemmich both hit national qualifying marks as well. Co won the event with a throw of 16.75 meters, while Roemmich was second with a 16.50 meter throw. Both those marks topped the NAIA National Qualifying “B” Standard of 16.25 meters.
On the track, the men’s 4×200 meter relay team set a new school record Saturday. Konnor Stueve, Yariel Rivera-Mujica, Brandon Sanders and Wolley Tuala teamed up to finish the 4×200 in a time of 1:32.92. That edged the old school record of 1:33.30 set back in 2018.
Alex Otto won the men’s high jump with a height of 1.95 meters. Dorian Furtado finished the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 9.07 to take first place, and Brandon Sanders won the men’s 400 meters with a time of 51.35 seconds.
Allyssa Weitkum added a title on the women’s side as well, winning the 800 meters in a time of 2:34.41.
Along with the six event titles, the Vikings also had 17 other Top 3 finishes Saturday.
With their national qualifying marks, Robertson, Co and Roemmich have all qualified for the NAIA Indoor National Championships, which will be held March 5-7 in Brookings, S.D.
Up next: Valley City State is back in action next weekend at the UND Open in Grand Forks, N.D. A few events will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, and the bulk of the meet will be on Saturday, Feb. 1.
