VALLEY CITY, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com)- The Viking women’s basketball team travels to Sioux City, Iowa to compete in Briar Cliff University’s Holiday Classic Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
The Vikings are currently 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play this season.
Valley City State is coming off a 91-78 victory over Dickinson State in their conference opener on Dec. 7, with four Vikings scoring in double figures. After posting her first double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, Adriana Torres was named NSAA Player of the Week on Dec. 9.
Viking Head Coach Vanessa Johnson says the layoff has been good, but now its back to work.
Valley City State opens the Holiday Classic tournament Saturday afternoon when they face nationally ranked Morningside College at 1 p.m. Morningside currently sits at No. 7 of the NAIA Division II national rankings and boasts a 10-3 overall record. Four Mustangs average double figure scoring.
As a team, Morningside claims numerous top-5 spots in the NAIA Division II statistic ranks. They rank number one in free throw percentage (.790), number three in total 3-pointers made (146), number four in assists per game (19.3), number four in steals per game (15.8), and number five in total steals (205).
Coach Johnson says the key against Morningside is going to be tempo.
The Vikings then take on tournament-host Briar Cliff University on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The Chargers are 3-10 overall this season with a pair of wins over NSAA member Dakota State University.
Briar Cliff is led by Konnor Sudman who is averaging 16.8 points per game.
Valley City State adds two more non-conference games in early January as they travel to Bethany Lutheran College and University of Jamestown. The Vikings resume conference play at home when they host Dakota State University on Friday, Jan. 10, and Bellevue University on Saturday, Jan. 11.
