JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The first of its kind program in the state will begin with a scrimmage Tuesday night from Harold Newman Arena.
The University of Jamestown announced in 2018 that the school would be adding a men’s volleyball team to their slate of athletic offerings. Now, the team is competing against one another in a scrimmage to showcase themselves to the school. While the Great Plains Atheltic Conference (GPAC) does not offer men’s volleyball, the team will play as an NAIA championship level sport.
Head Coach Riley Salmon built the team from scratch saying that the game is a little different from women’s volleyball in that it is more physical and coordination is different.
Salmon is far from a stranger of the sport. He played 17 years professionally, with 12 of those on the US Men’s Olympic Volleyball team, competing in three Olympic games. Salmon said, “the great thing is I get to share this with the kids at the University of Jamestown and tell them how important it is what they’re doing and hopefully bring some recognition to the sport.
The scrimmage is Tuesday, December 17th at 6:30pm in the Harold Newman Arena. The event is free and open to the public.
