JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It’s a sign of the community’s holiday spirit and has been a tradition for many years to chop down a tree and place it at the Jamestown Civic Center.
This year, the city has opted instead to use the live tree in front of the Jamestown Fire Department.
City Administrator Sarah Hellekson says discussions regarding the tree came about in 2018 and again in 2019 during the budgeting process. She said in 2018, two trees needed to be cut and removed.
“The trees that are removed have to be removed and the property owners want it done free, so the city pays the cost and the city comes back in the spring to remove and grind the stumps,” Hellekson stated. “As I’m working to reduce unnecessary costs in the budget, I tried to remove that in 2018 for safety and cost reasons, but the City Council chose to continue the program.”
In 2018, the tree placed at the Civic Center fell onto the wrought-iron railings, damaging them and doubling the costs of replacing the tree. Hellekson says the city forester had a second tree on the list, removed it, erected it, and decorated it again.
Because of this and the cost factor, Hellekson says they’ve instead decided to go a different route.
“Instead, the city forester will continue to promote the decoration of live trees outdoors and a healthy tree canopy in the community,” Hellekson explained. “We invite the community to tour the excellent display of seasonal lights around the community. Happy Holidays!”
City Forester Erik Laber says he’s hopeful the new way will hopefully keep more trees alive while helping to alleviate the city’s budget.
“This is also a safety concern in addition to a budget concern,” Laber pointed out. “And the fire hall can always use a little more attention! So hopefully we are making a beneficial change here on multiple fronts.”
The tree has been decorated and is free to view in front of the Jamestown Fire Department.
