JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Rough Rider Rodeo Association finals were held in Jamestown October 25th through the 27th.
During a recent Jamestown Civic Center and Promotions committee meeting, it was learned that the event resulted in a loss according to Civic Center Manager Pam Fosse. Fosse stated that the rodeo finals brought in $11,693.41, but with expenses of adding dirt, janitorial hours, disposal of waste, and damages, the overall total resulted in a loss of $18,406.
Greg Carlsen with the Rough Rider Rodeo Association reports that the event has actually had a major, positive impact for the community.
“The North Dakota Tourism Department reports that the event brings in upwards of $1 million to the city through hotels, restaurants, and more,” Carlson stated. “We’re just a group of volunteers trying to bring something to the community that’s positive.”
Carlson stated he recently took over the financial responsibility of the association, which has been a big investment on his part.
“It’s about a $50,000 a year investment on my part that I have to recoup that through ticket sales and sponsorships. We’re volunteers doing this just to bring an event to the best of our ability and trying to do so positively.”
Carlson says he brings in up to 200 riders for the three-day event at the Civic Center. He says they’d like to get credit for what they’ve done to bring a large event to Jamestown every year.
“We all have jobs and we volunteer,” he stated. “We have very strong support from community businesses and want the positives of what the event has done for Jamestown to be known.”
