FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown High volleyball team dug themselves too deep of a hole Thursday afternoon in the Class A quarterfinals and eventually succumbed to Shanley, 3-1 (25-18, 25-12, 21-25, 25-23). The Jays fall to 2-5 in quarterfinal appearances since 2012 and in all but one of those match-ups they were the West No. 2 seed.

Jamestown looked flat to start the match and Shanley stormed out of the gates to a 2-0 lead including a dominate set two win. Reile Payne lead the Deacon attack finishing with 22 kills.

The Jays held off a late Shanley rally to win set three and push the match to a fourth set. It looked like we were headed to a fifth and decisive set with Jamestown leading 19-11 and seemed to find their swagger. The defense and passing took a noticeable leap midway through the match and Shanley was on their heels.

However, Shanley took advantage of Jamestown playing without their top-two offensive options, Ella Roaldson and Grace Hegerle, in the front row to rattle off nine of the next 10.

The Deacons wrestled away control and Payne finished off the match with back-to-back left side kills to send Shanley to the semifinals to battle Davies.

Jessa Anderson lead Jamestown with 12 kills. Ella Roaldson added 11. The Jays will play Mandan in the consolation semifinals at 1pm on Friday.
