MEDORA, N.D. – Four Vikings placed in the Top 5 on Monday as the VCSU golf teams wrapped up the two-day Dickinson State Fall Invite at Bully Pulpit Golf Course.
VCSU golfers Hayley Shanks and Jocelyn Braunberger placed second and third, respectively, in the women’s tournament. On the men’s side, Viking seniors Collin Hoss and Cameron Rall took fourth and fifth, respectively.
As a team, Valley City State’s men placed second overall. The Vikings shot a 308 on Monday – shaving 13 shots off their first round score – to finish with a two-day total of 629. South Dakota School of Mines “A” won the event with a 614 total. South Dakota School of Mines “B” was third (653) and Dickinson State took fourth (662).
Hoss fired a 1-under round of 71 on Monday, climbing 11 spots on the leaderboard to fourth place overall. It was the only round of the tournament under par by any golfer. He finished with a two-day total of 155, which was seven shots back of medalist Roger Nakagawa (147) from SD Mines.
Rall followed up his first round 79 with a 77 on Monday, coming in with a two-day total of 156 for his second Top 5 finish this season. Tanner Schnathorst finished eighth place for the Vikings after shooting 81-80. Brady Warcken (84-80) placed 11th, Taylor Finlayson (81-84) was 12th and Jayden Ewoniuk (77-93) tied for 17th place.
The Viking women took third place overall, shooting a 408 on Sunday and then improving to a 390 on Monday. South Dakota School of Mines won the women’s tournament with a 752 while Dickinson State edged the Vikings by eight shots for second place.
Viking freshman Hayley Shanks finished just one shot off the medalist position, placing second with her two-day total of 187. Shanks shot a 97 on Sunday and a round of 90 on Monday. VCSU sophomore Jocelyn Braunberger was just four shots off the leader as she placed third overall. Braunberger carded a 98 on Sunday and a 92 on Monday for a 190 total.
Madeline Wilkie (107-101) placed 11th, Taren Braunberger (106-107) was 12th, and Gabrielle Wilkie (112-113) took 13th.
Up next: The Vikings will wrap up their fall season by hosting the one-day Valley City State Invite on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The 18-hole tournament will be played at Maple River Golf Club in Mapleton, N.D. Golfers are scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m.
