HASTINGS, Neb. (JimmiAthletics.com) – Wide receiver Garrett Mitchell (SO/Shakopee, Minn.) caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Mann (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) to tie a program record, but the University of Jamestown football team fell to Hastings College 38-21 Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell became the sixth Jimmie receiver to catch three touchdowns in a game, tying the record last set by Trent Roemmich on November 10, 2012 against Mayville State (N.D.) University.

The UJ offense struggled to find its footing in the first half, netting a total of 13 yards in five possessions, all of which ended in a punt.

Trailing 21-0, Mann led the Jimmies on an 11 play, 83-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 21-yard pass to Mitchell. Sean Fenelon (SO/West Fargo, N.D.)’s extra point made it 21-7 at halftime.

Hastings extended their lead to 24-7 with a 32-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half.

Jamestown wasted no time in responding to the field goal, as Mann found Mitchell for a 52-yard touchdown on the next play from scrimmage.

The Jimmies pulled within three points, 24-21, after a six-yard Mann to Mitchell pass with 5:07 left in the third quarter.

Hastings kept UJ off of the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, forcing a punt and recovering two Jimmie fumbles. Eleven of Hastings’ 14 fourth-quarter points resulted from Jamestown turnovers.

Mann finished 15-of-29 passing for 174 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He also led the Jimmies in rushing with 21 yards on 15 carries. Mitchell caught six balls for 109 yards and the three scores. Barry Williams Jr. (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) had three receptions for 24 yards.

Aundre Purnell (SR/Garden Grove, Calif.) had nine tackles, including a sack. Mitchell Swartz (SO/Peyton, Colo.) had 1.5 sacks among his five tackles, while Zachary Phillips (FR/Buffalo, Minn.) picked up the other half-sack. Manuel Najera (JR/Los Angeles, Calif.) had UJ’s other sack. Jordan Olson (SO/Prior Lake, Minn.) and Troy Stuard (SR/Daingerfield, Texas) intercepted passes.

Next up for the Jimmies (0-3) is a home game against Dordt (Iowa) University on Saturday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
