Thoughts:
Thanks to Jamestown for hosting our match today. Every JV player was able to play a singles match and most also got in a doubles match as well along with completing our varsity match!
We definitely have a solid #1 in Blake Triebold. He brings it day in and day out. Isaac is a great player as proved by taking 5th in the WDA last season, but Blake had his number today.
After our #1, we have six solid players. Collin was one point from going to 5-4 in the second set with the momentum in our favor. Austin won in three sets. Derek, Seth, and Kai left no doubt in their singles matches at #4, #5 and #6.
In the doubles, we tried a new line-up. Derek had his eyes opened when he played #1 doubles. We were just getting used to it when Blake tweaked his back. As it was a non-conference match, we retired from that match to conserve the Blake’s health. At #2 doubles, Austin and Collin had the best match of the day. They attacked the net, they stepped into their groundstrokes, and they played excellent defense. At #3 doubles, we had another new team with Bennett and Seth. We eventually won the match, but it wasn’t the prettiest – which is to be expected with a new duo. We will continue to work in practice and tweak the line-up to be able to put our best foot forward.
Our team is 3-0 on the season, but we can still hit another gear. We have the skills. We have the strategy. We have the experience. What we need on the court is the fire. The fire to win. The fire to get to every ball. The fire to play each point with great footwork and shot selections. The fire to close off the net and finish points. That fire along with a positive attitude could propel us to the next level. As a coach, I need to find a way to unleash this fire from within each of the players. Once we unleash that fire, we will be scary opponent for anyone to face. We have one day of practice before West Fargo to start this process.
Next action is at home on Thursday at 4pm against the Packers.
