VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The city of Valley City held a ribbon cutting ceremony thanking the Governor, the State Water Commission, North Dakota lawmakers and several other entities responsible for approving the Permanent Flood Protection Projects in Valley City over the last decade.
Lieutenant Governor Brent Sanford complimented the city for their efforts to protect the city from future flooding with these projects.
Valley City Mayor Dave Carlsrud said without the help of federal and state agencies the city could have suffered serious damaged during the flood fights of 2009, 2010 and 2011. He said if the levees would have failed it would have cost more than $40 million dollars in damage.
City Administrator David Schelkoph said the State Water Commission has approved of more than $50 million dollars to help the city construct it’s permanent flood protection projects through the 2021 biennium. He also thanked the city tax payers for approving (in an earlier vote) a portion of the city sales tax to be used for permanent flood protection projects over the next 30 years.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Main Street near the City Park footbridge on Thursday, July 18th.
