JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Residents of Jamestown have wondered why there hasn’t been much mosquito fogging operations quite yet.

Dawn DeVillers works with the Vector Control Department. Their purpose is to control the mosquito population in and around the city of Jamestown.

“Realistically, we can not kill every mosquito in Jamestown, but we can apply certain techniques to at least substantially decrease their numbers.,” the city website states.

DeVillers states that there really hasn’t been a need to spray just yet and conditions have not really allowed for it.

“There’s a few factors when we spray. If the wind is 10 mph or more, fogging doesn’t really work well. If we get desperate, we may fog in winds of 15 to 20 mph, but it just isn’t economical if it’s too windy. It’s also been a bit cooler this summer.”

DeVillers also says she has a threshold she uses before determining if to fog or not.

“We have 10 traps in Jamestown and of those 10, only 2 near the golf course are really full enough for us to consider spraying,” she says. “We’ve fogged up there twice. We just don’t want it to be a waste.”

The city states that effective mosquito management requires a well-planned program.

“Such programs often are expensive, complex, and require the cooperation of individual homeowners, industry and agriculture groups, and local and state governments. A mosquito management program may be justified when it can be demonstrated that mosquito annoyance prevents the reasonable use of yards, gardens, and parks, or when mosquito populations pose health problems beyond the reasonable control of individual property owners.”
