(NewsDakota.com) The Southeast Jamestown Regional DUI Task Force will conduct heightened DUI enforcement from June 8-23, 2012. The goal of the Regional DUI Task Force is to deter the public from driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs to keep North Dakota roads safe for all users.

“For those of us in law enforcement, we wish DUI enforcement was not necessary and that people would do the right thing by choosing to drive sober,” commented Jason Prochnow, Officer Jamestown Police Department. “But that is not the reality we live in,” Prochnow stated.

“Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is unacceptable,” said Chad Kaiser, Sheriff Stutsman County. “Our work with DUI enforcement is not done until there are zero lives lost to impaired driving on North Dakota roads,” said Kaiser.

In 2011, there were 148 fatalities on North Dakota roads and 66 (45%) of them were alcohol related. “With over 6,000 DUI arrests made in the state of North Dakota in 2011, there’s no doubt that North Dakota has a serious problem with people choosing to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” stated Aaron Hummel, Lieutenant North Dakota Highway Patrol. “We have a lot more work to do to tackle this problem,” said Hummel.

“The Regional DUI Task Force is doing their part to deter impaired driving,” said Mark Nelson, Director of the NDDOT’s Safety Division. “But, ultimately it’s each person’s responsibility to make the decision to drive sober for the benefit of all road users,” Nelson concluded.

The Southeast Jamestown Regional DUI Task Force includes the following agencies: NDHP, Eddy, Foster, Griggs, Stutsman, Barnes, Logan, McIntosh and LaMoure Sheriff’s Departments, and Carrington, Jamestown, Valley City, LaMoure, Kulm and Oakes Police Departments.
