CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Viking mens basketball team is becoming a well-known commodity in the Lone Star state.
With 13 players set to return from a 20-win season a year ago, Valley City State will sign few new players this off-season. Forward Sedrick Jenkins and guard Thomas Cherry, both of Killeen, TX, have signed letters of intent to join the Vikings in 2012.
Jenkins will transfer from Temple College in Temple, TX, with three years of eligibility after a standout career at Killeen High School, averaging 13.4 points on a 31-4 Kangaroos team in 2011. He was named first-team All-District 8 at the 4A level of basketball in Texas.
“Sedrick is a quality kid that will provide solid perimeter shooting as well as being able to help handle the ball when necessary,” said Killeen High School Head coach Jason Fossett.
Viking coach Jeff Kaminsky said, “Sedrick’s athleticism will be a great fit in our defensive system. He has the character, work ethic, and ability that make him a welcomed addition to our program.”
Cherry comes to the Vikings as a true freshman, but he is hardly inexperienced, becoming the only player in Harker Heights High School (Killeen, TX) history to play more than 100 games at the varsity level. He averaged 12.3 pionts and shot 47.8% and was also a first-team All-District selection his senior year.
“Cherry had a tremendous amount of success playing in an extremely competitive area of Texas high school basketball, and we look forward to him being part of our program,” said Kaminsky of Cherry.
Jenkins and Cherry join A.J. McDonald (Fr., Killeen, TX), and Malcom McDonald (Fr., Killeen, TX) as players from Killeen on the Viking roster. Former Viking Ray King, who graduated from VCSU in 2009, was also from Killeen.
