VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation is happy to announce the recipients of their 2019 Community Grant Round.

Executive Director Andrea Nelson said thanks to generous donors and a successful fundraising event last fall we were able to award $34,750 to thirteen nonprofits in Barnes, Griggs and Ransom Counties. Four of the nonprofits received funding through two donor advised funds.

Joe & Kim Burns Family established a Donor Advised Fund to support the needs of local first responders and utilized the 2019 Community Grant Round to determine their awards. Kim Burns, a native of Barnes County says “we have been very blessed to be in a position to assist others in need.” Burns continues, “Our decision to fund first responders comes from our daughter’s role as an EMT. We learned through her that most EMT servicers operate on a shoe string budget and many responders view their job as a calling. This is our way of showing respect and support for these dedicated individuals.”

City County Health District’s request of $5,000 was fully funded through the Joe and Kim Burns Family Donor Advised Fund ($4,000) and the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation ($1,000). Funds for the project allows CCHD to purchase 15 AED units that will be place in our rural communities and high traffic areas currently lacking an AED. “Thanks to this funding opportunity, we are able to help our community become more completely “cardiac ready”, offering our facilities and businesses the ability to purchase an AED at a lower cost than they could if each purchasing separately.” said Theresa Will, Administrator, City County Health District.

Sisters of Mary of the Presentation’s request of $750 was also fully funded through the Joe and Kim Burns Family Donor Advised Fund. This allows them to establish first response equipment on the Maryvale premises which includes an AED and supplemental oxygen and supplies. “As a regional retreat center and far from EMS personnel, it is important that we provide a safe environment for our guests at Maryvale” said Gail Pederson, SPRN, HN-BC at Maryvale.

George and Audrey Gaukler Family Foundation also awarded funds through the Community Grant Round to local nonprofits.

Abused Persons Outreach Center was awarded $5,000 to support direct services provided to meet the immediate needs of victims and their children of domestic violence and sexual assault. “We can’t thank the foundation enough.” Said Kasey Skalicky, Director of APOC. “Your support creates opportunities for victims, survivors and their children at a time when many feel they have limited or no options.”
Education Foundation for VCPS- Access For All Program received $5,000 to support onsite school-based-mental health services to the students of Valley City Public School.
