FREMONT, NEB. (VCSUVikings.com) – The Valley City State men’s golf team opened its spring season with a solid sixth-place finish this week at the large Midland Spring Invitational.
Playing at Fremont Golf Club in Fremont, Neb., the Vikings put together rounds of 313 and 309 over the two-day event Monday and Tuesday. Valley City’s two-day total of 622 placed the Vikings sixth out of 14 teams on the par 71 course. The Vikings were eight shots back of Dordt College for fifth place and 35 shots back of tournament champion Midland University.
VCSU junior Collin Hoss placed 15th overall as the top Viking finisher. Hoss shot a 78 on Monday and then closed strong with a 2-over 73 during Tuesday’s final round – the best round by a VCSU golfer at the event. Hoss was golfing unattached, meaning his score of 151 did not count towards VCSU’s team score.
Along with Hoss, the Vikings had four other golfers finish in the Top 30 out of 73 total golfers. Tanner Schnathorst tied for 19th overall with a 154 (76-78) while Jared Lentz tied for 22nd with a 155 (76-79). Cameron Rall tied for 25th with his 156 (78-78) and Casey Julson tied for 27th with a 157 (83-74). Taylor Finlayson rounded out VCSU’s team with a 166 total (87-79) and 50th-place finish.
