FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Shanley pulled in front early and never trailed in the quarterfinals of The EDC girl’s basketball tournament. The 2nd seeded Deacons topped the 7th seed Valley City 56-45 Tuesday night in Fargo.
After Shanley scored the game’s first 6 points both teams were victims of a scoring drought. The next points wouldn’t come until there was 12:36 left in the half and were the first of the night for Valley City. Twice The Hi-Liners were able to pull within 2 point but Shanley kept in front led by Hadley Huber’s 14 points.
The first half was riddled with fouls, both teams had 14. The Deacons were 12 of 20 from the free throw line in the first half and led 30-17 at the break.
In the second half Shanley created some more separation behind 7 quick points from Reile Payne. Valley City narrowly had the scoring edge over the final 18 minutes, they outscored the Deacons 28-26 but it was not enough for a comeback.
Taryn Dieterle scored 16 points in the second half and ended the game with a team high 19 points, she’d add 13 boards for a double double. Grace Scherr scored 8 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Lindsey Noeske added 6 points.
Payne also had a 16 points final half for Shanley, she had a game high 22. Huber scored 18 points.
Both teams play again Thursday at The SHAC in Fargo. No.6 Davies beat No.3 Sheyenne 64-52 setting up the next round games. Shanley faces Davies in the championship semifinals at 7:15. The Hi-Liners play Sheyenne in a loser out game at 3:45.
