(Valley City, ND) – Wilbur Gabel and two of his grandsons all from Valley City recently traveled to Monroe, LA, to compete in this year’s 2011 World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament. This year’s tournament drew over 800 participants. Noah 8 years old and Wilbur Gabel, both defending 2010 World Champions, were attempting to repeat their achievement.
Noah’s effort came up just short, and he finished as runner-up. In championship day play, Noah forced a playoff to determine this year’s Cadet World Championship. After defeating this year’s eventual champion to force the playoff, Noah’s effort to repeat as World Champ fell short when the player from California edged him out to win the playoff and this year’s World Championship.
Wilbur Gabel in his attempt to defend his Class World Championship also came up short. Although Wilbur pitched pretty well and finished in 6th place, he knows that in order to win the championship you have to have everything go right, some of those ringers that stuck last year, rung off this year.
Noah’s brother, Cameron Gabel (age 12), was competing for his second year. He had a lot of fun, pitched decent, and finished 10th place in his class.
The three Gabels are already making plans to compete in next year’s tournament to be held in Nashville, Tennessee.
