OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After a rough first game of the season, the Oakes boys basketball squad jumped into the win column for the first time this year with a 56-52 victory over the Sargent Central Cadets.
Sargent Central took an early 7-2 lead just over midway through the first quarter, but that was it for the Cadets. Oakes would take the lead later in the quarter and remain in front to the final buzzer. Even when leading for almost all of the game, the game was never out of reach for Sargent Central. The biggest deficit the Cadets faced was 12 in the second quarter, but they continued to battle and keep it close until the end.
The win notches first year head coach Nolan Peterson’s first win in Oakes.
Drew Dethlefsen produced another strong showing by scoring 15 points (34 points through two games). Dalton Schmit scored 11 points, David Schmitz finished with nine points, and Alex Muggli scored seven points.
Sargent Central was kept in the game by Logan Wyum who finished with a game high 25 points.
Oakes improves to 1-1 and Sargent Central drops to 0-1.
The Tornadoes next game is this Friday at Ellendale.
