DEVILS LAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Tuesday night had the feel of an EDC Tournament Match for The Hi-Liners and Firebirds. In their regular season finale, Valley City held off Devils Lake for a 5 set win 25-12, 16-25, 25-14, 26-28, 15-8.
Big runs in sets 1 and 3 helped VCHS to wins while in the 2nd set they couldn’t overcome an early 6-0 deficit. In the 4 set The Hi-Liners had Devils Lake on the ropes 20-14 but The Firebirds stormed back with a 14-6 run to force the final set.
Team’s exchanged leads to open the final set, it was after a 5-5 tie that Valley City would go on to outscore Devils Lake 10-3 to get the win.
The defeat of The Firebirds helps end a 2 game skid heading into the postseason tournament but also avenges a 4 set loss from back in September. Head coach Mattie Cruff said she was happy with how her team handled Devils Lake the second time around
Macy Olstad led the offense with 13 kills, she’d also get 2 aces. Josie Berntson had 8 kills, 22 digs, 19 assist and 5 blocks. Grace Sche2r collected 28 digs and 3 aces. Cali Halgrimson finished with 7 kills and 25 digs. Lindsey Noeske added 13 digs, 6 kills and 6 blocks.
Tuesday’s match did not effect either team’s seeding in The EDC. The Firebirds end with a 14-6 mark in the region and will be the 4th seed, Valley City finishes 13-7 and will be the 5th seed meaning the 2 will meet again Tuesday in the quarterfinals in Devils Lake.
Not only will be their second consecutive meeting, the game will also be played at 2 in the afternoon.
