Coach’s Comments
The score doesn’t show it, but we played very tight and without much energy. We do have a few kids battling illness, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still play the right way. I as the coach need to find the way to get us to that point no matter the opponent.
This might be a first for our team earning a total sweep of all the varsity and JV matches. Even if our play wasn’t the best, we still did figure out how to win. Blake Triebold told me he was a step slow and had a cold, but he figured out a way to win even though his shots weren’t at the top of his game.
Jack was solid today. He turns on his footwork and racquet prep and away he went. He didn’t drop a game on the day. Hale was also solid in his doubles match. He hit his groundstrokes crosscourt and went for it on the net.
Collin continues to play Jekyll and Hyde with his play. He turns it on for points…maybe games…at a time. Then, he lets his grey matter get in the way. When Collin is in the moment, his feet move effortlessly, his stroke is smooth, and his fist pumps. We need to stay in that zone. You can do it Collin!
Derek showed today in singles that he needs an opportunity in doubles. He is very confident with approach shots and playing the net. Once at the net, he attacks the ball. That is exactly what we need in a doubles player!
Austin and Bennett both played ok in the doubles and singes. They both had unforced errors because they overthought shots. It is tough to play a weaker opponent, but we need to figure out a way to just keep the positive thoughts flow and follow through on our strokes.
On the JV side, we played the two Krugers together and it worked well. We will see if they wish to continue this team. Seth found his second serve and is continuing to develop his game in the right direction. Jayden was very coachable today. He had a rough service game, double faulting 3 points. He listened to coaching which led to him getting all of his serves in the next game and winning the match.
