JAMESTOWN, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – VCSU senior Jared Lentz shot 4-under par and the Viking men’s golf team finished 2-under overall as both took first place Tuesday at the season-opening University of Jamestown Invitational.
Lentz carded a collegiate-best round of 68 during the 18-hole tournament at the Jamestown Country Club. He finished tied for first place individually with Devon Schade of the University of Manitoba, but Lentz took home medalist honors after winning the scorecard tiebreaker with his blistering back-nine score of 33. It is the fourth time in his Viking career that Lentz has placed first at a tournament.
Four Vikings finished in the Top 8 of the men’s tournament as VCSU took first place with its round of 286. The 2-under team total of 286 is the first time the team has finished a round under par since the program was reinstated at VCSU in 2009. The Vikings narrowly edged Manitoba by two shots for first place and finished 21 shots ahead of the University of Jamestown, which placed third. A total of eight teams and 45 golfers competed in the men’s tournament.
Viking senior Casey Julson carded a 1-under score of 71 to take third place overall. Sophomore Tanner Schnathorst tied for fifth with his 1-over 73, and sophomore Taylor Finlayson tied for eighth with a 74. Cameron Rall (77, 16th) rounded out VCSU’s top team.
The Vikings also had a second team competing Tuesday which was led by Collin Hoss who shot a 75 and tied for 10th individually. Also competing on VCSU’s second team were Levi Nix (81, 33rd), Jayden Ewoniuk (89, 40th) and Dalton Beighley (95, 44th).
On the women’s side, Valley City State placed fourth out of five teams. VCSU freshman Jocelyn Braunberger recorded a Top 10 finish in her collegiate debut. Braunberger shot an 89 as she tied for seventh individually.
The Viking women finished with a team score of 394. Taren Braunberger placed 14th with a 96; Megan McNamee was 17th with a 98; and Tory Anderson rounded out VCSU’s team score by placing 22nd with her score of 108.
Up next: Valley City State will travel to Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to compete at the Concordia College Invite on Sept. 8-9.
