VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After a recent inspection, the state will allow the Barnes County Correctional Facility to remain open as a Grade 1 facility, which means the jail can again hold inmates up to one year.
The jail will continue to be monitored by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation until the end of the year. At that time, the Barnes County Correctional Facility must have to have a plan in place to either extensively renovate or build a new jail.
State Director of Facility Operations Don Redmann said Jail Administrator Julie Forsman and Sheriff Randy McClafflin made changes in order to run the jail efficiently and safely. He said jail nurse Julia Anderson helped re-write policies to make sure all of the staff is medically trained.
A previous inspection of the jail back in November 2017 found the facility to be non-compliant with multiple standards.
The jail will be inspected again, if the inspection turns up no more safety concerns, the state will allow the jail to re-open the minimum security/work release unit as well.
