JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For nearly 50 years, the Fort Seward Wagon train has provided a unique, authentic experience for its participants.
In 1969, the wagon train was established as a onetime experience. Organizers found that making the week-long expedition a yearly experience proved to be a great benefit for those wishing to relive the pioneer family experience.
Board President Adam Olson and Vice President Lacey Kaiser have participated in the wagon train for the last few years. This year marks the 49th year the wagon train will be assembled.
Kaiser says the experience is much more unique because they are a “working” wagon train, which gives the participants a true homesteader’s experience.
Once on the trail, riders will travel during the day and set up camp in the afternoon. Each day will feature historical chats and demonstrations on numerous different topics.
Kaiser says each participant will have certain “duties” while riding and walking along with the wagon train.
Since its inception, the ride has had participants from all over the world, with some coming all the way from Florida for the experience.
Olson says with their 50th year coming in 2019, they’re looking forward to an even larger crowd to come out.
The group will travel approximately 79 miles over a week, heading north along trails and making a loop back to Fort Seward. Kaiser says riders can participate in the whole experience or come out for one or two days of their choice.
The ride will begin Sunday, June 24th and end June 30th.
