JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Two individuals are in custody and facing charges after leading authorities on a pursuit late Thursday night in Jamestown.
Lt. Sid Mann reports that just before 12 AM, an officer attempted to stop a white passenger car on the 200 block of 10th St. SE for driving without a headlamp and no tail lamps.
“The vehicle accelerated away from the officer instead of pulling over,” Lt. Mann reported. “The vehicle continued reaching speeds of around 60 to 80 miles per hour.”
The vehicle sped through the 4-way intersection at 3rd St. SE and went through the viaduct on the wrong side of the road. Lt. Mann says officers set up spike strips to attempt to disable the vehicle.
“The vehicle struck a caragana tree in Feton Park behind the Legacy Center which disabled the vehicle,” Lt. Mann reported.
Driver Richard Schmidt fled on foot and was apprehend at nearby intersection. Passenger Mark Leslie Fasset was still in the vehicle and taken into custody. Both men were evaluated by Ringdahl Ambulance Service.
Lt. Mann says their investigation led to the charges of fleeing or attempting to elude in a motor vehicle, failure to halt, DUI on drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia-methamphetamine for Schmidt. Fasset was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia-methamphetamine.
Interstate Crossroads Towing responded to tow the disabled vehicle. The Jamestown Police Department was assisted by the Stutsman County sheriff’s Department and North Dakota Highway Patrol.
