JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Tagged as one of the biggest draws to Jamestown, the drag races are returning May 19th and 20th to the Jamestown Regional Airport.
The summer event continues to be a big economic boost to the region. An estimated $289,163 was brought in in 2017 according to Jamestown Tourism. 1,718 spectators and racers participated with 986 of them being local. The event was held at the Jamestown Regional Airport, who cordons off one of their runways for the big event.
Jamestown Drag Racing Association (JDRA) Member Tyler Michael says they’re excited for what the 2018 event will bring.
Michael says a fun twist to the event is anyone can drag in it, no matter their vehicle or experience.
Michael says the event is one of a kind and because of the draw it brings, the JDRA is working on building a drag strip in a nearby township so more events like it can be held. Michael says it would be the first and only 1/4 mile drag strip built in North Dakota.
Michael says they’re hoping to build the strip in the next 3 to 5 years, but any donations and fundraisers they do would benefit the future project.
The event is Saturday and Sunday at the Jamestown Regional Airport. Tickets are $10 and ages 6 & under get in free. Gates will open 7AM each day.
