N.D.-Steady progress is being made in the cleanup of the city of Oakes from the storm that rolled through town a couple of weeks ago.

Oakes Mayor Monty Zimmer says the city is asking residents to continue their efforts in clearing their yards. The final disposal site, located east of the Butcher Block in the southeast part of town will remain open until the first of August.

The city has also hired a licensed forester contractor to removing any hazardous trees. Zimmer says the highest priority trees have already been removed, and the ones that are left will be reviewed to determine cost shares, if any, for the removal. The city will also notify property owners of hazardous and diseased trees, and work with them to have the trees removed.

Zimmer also noted that a FEMA damage assessment team was in town on July 21 to review the damages from the storm. Damages to public infrastructure must total at least $1 million in order to qualify for financial assistance, and the FEMA report is in the process of being finalized.
