VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The City of Valley City imposed three penalties against the American Legion during a special city commission meeting on April 10th.

Earlier, the city issued a Notice of Alcoholic Beverage License Violation to the American Legion stemming from a March 4th incident where an underage female who had a high blood alcohol content later passed out in a restroom.

American Legion Commander James Riden said we will be more diligent checking in the future.

At issue was a fake I.D. that fooled a bar server earlier in the evening. Judith Benefeld works at the American Legion. She said the club has implemented an I.D. scanning machine thanks to City County Health.

Under the penalty the American Legion will have to select 7 days to be closed between now and October 10th. The Legion will also be placed on 36 months of probation and have to pay a $300 administrative penalty.

City Administrator David Schelkoph said this penalty will serve as a wake-up call to other establishments that a violation of the city alcohol ordinance will not be tolerated.

The city commission approved of the penalty on a 4 to 0 vote. Commissioner Matt Pedersen was not at the special meeting.
