VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com)- Viking sophomore Emily Smith has earned the NAIA Softball National Pitcher of the Week award, the national office announced today.
Smith – a second-year pitcher/infielder from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba – was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Pitcher of the Week after throwing 37.2 innings last week in Tucson, Ariz. She posted a 4-0 record with two saves, a 2.02 ERA, 40 strikeouts and only 10 walks. Smith pitched in 11 of VCSU’s 12 games last week, including 6 2/3 shutout innings in a 1-0 victory against Bellevue University.
Her strong performances helped the Vikings post a 10-2 record during games last week. At the plate, Smith batted .385 with 14 runs scored and seven RBI. Smith was chosen for the award out of a national pool of conference, independent and unaffiliated group winners.
Smith was named the North Star Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
