JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Residents in Jamestown were shocked when Last Leg Taxi closed their doors earlier this year.
This has caused some individuals to step up and offer their vehicles through the popular riding app Lyft. Lyft is an on-demand transportation company based in San Francisco and according to the Wall Street Journal, the company provides 1 million rides a day with 18.7 million reported in a month in the U.S.
Lynn Hill recently signed up to be a driver and bring the service to Jamestown.
“I don’t think anyone else in Jamestown is a driver for Lyft,” Hill told NewsDakota.com. “I think I may be the only one right now. I got interested after my friend in Dickinson got involved with them. So, I decided to start doing it in Jamestown.”
The app employes drivers to use their own personal vehicle and provide transportation to those that request it. Once the ride is over, the app user will use a card to pay Lyft, who will then pay the driver for their service.
“It’s like Uber,” Hill explained. “I am fairly new to it, but I just had my first rider this week. They needed to get to work and weren’t able to wait for a taxi, so they used the app and I was on call.”
Individuals who apply to be drivers can set their phones to accept rides at their own leisure.
The service has been in state of North Dakota, but has only been used in larger cities such as Bismarck and Fargo. Hill hopes it provides another mode of transportation to those who need a ride in Jamestown or parts of the area.
