City, ND On July 21, 2011 approximately 100 young people along with many parents and other adults attended the 14th annual JAKES Day event at the Valley City Trap Club. JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship. It was a beautiful evening filled with fun, food and outdoor education.
Participants began arriving around 5:00 pm to register. They were placed in one of five groups that were to visit the five stations set up on Club property. Festivities began at 5:30. Eager youth rotated through the stations in 25-minute sessions. The following experiences were offered:
- Free food and drink offered by the Barnes County Wildlife Federation (yummy hot dogs and burgers!)
- Chahinkapa Zoo from Wahpeton, ND with Falco the kestrel and Cornelius the corn snake (Yes! Real, live animals!)
- An archery range complete with real bows, arrows and 3-D targets
- A water safety presentation by the US Army Corps of Engineers with Bobber the Water Safety Dog
- Making plaster casts of animal tracks and learning about North Dakota mammals with the US Fish and Wildlife Service

The event wrapped up at 8:30 pm when every young person in attendance received prizes and gifts including a t-shirt designed specifically for the event. At the conclusion of JAKES Day, the Trap Club offered participants the opportunity to shoot a round of trap with complimentary shotguns and ammunition. Approximately 25 of the older youth shot a trap round.
