N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Council has taken the first steps towards the 2018 city budget Tuesday evening.
The city council made quick work of the agenda, approving the first reading of both the General and Special Funds as well as the Revenue and Special Funds for 2018. A second reading of the city code amendment pertaining to the parking of trailers, motor homes and other large vehicles on city streets was also approved. The new amendment would require individuals to place reflective tape on both front and back of their equipment.
“This will replace one line in the city code that requires individuals to place reflective tape on the front of their RV’s or trailers if they are parked the wrong way on a street,” Mayor Katie Andersen elaborated.
Councilman Dan Buchanan inquired when the ordinance would go into effect. City Administrator Jeff Fuchs reported that it would go into effect a week after it was published in the Jamestown Sun, which he estimated to be this Friday or Saturday.
One of the last items of discussion was a settlement agreement between the City of Jamestown and Christine Stein. Stein had claimed she was wrongfully arrested and jailed after calling 911 in May 2015.
City Administrator Jeff Fuchs explained the case against the city to the council.
The city would be required to authorize $75,000 from the North Dakota Insurance Reserve fund to cover their portion of the $90,000 settlement. Councilman Buchanan stated his concerns over the other required portions of the settlement for the Jamestown Police Department and Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.
Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger assured Buchanan and the rest of the council that they were fine undertaking more training to prepare themselves in another, similar situation arose.
Edinger says there’s a lot of flexibility with the newly required training from the settlement. Edinger says they have interpreting services for foreign languages and can address other issues if they were to happen. The council unanimously accepted the settlement agreement.
