the St. Olaf/Carleton Invitational in Northfield, Minn.

Valley City State swept North Central University in Saturday’s first match, 25-12, 25-13, 25-22. The Vikings then rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Carleton College in five sets: 26-28, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-11.

The Vikings improve to 4-4 overall this season. They are back in action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. road match at University of Mary. That match will be televised live on BEK 247. VCSU has it’s home opener on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Concordia-Moorhead.

VCSU 3, North Central University 0

The Vikings left no doubt in the first match Saturday, outhitting North Central .326 to .117 and serving up 12 aces.

Autumn Johnson had a big match with 13 kills and only one attack error as she led the Vikings. Clarissa Olson, McKinley Putnam and Polette Medina all had five kills each.

Rowan Garcia tallied 21 assists. Medina had a team-high six service aces. Hailie Wilds served up four aces and had a team-high 11 digs.

VCSU 3, Carleton College 2

The Vikings faced their first adversity of the weekend in the final match, falling behind two sets to none against Saturday’shost Carleton College.

The Vikings went to work the rest of the way, rallying to win the match with 25-22, 25-22 and 15-11 victories over the final three sets. VCSU found a difference at the net as the Vikings tallied 14 blocks points, compared to just one for Carleton.

Megan Johnson had 15 kills to lead three Vikings in double-digit kills. Clarissa Olson tallied 12 kills and four service aces, and Polette Medina smashed 11 kills in the match. Leah Ruter led the Vikings with 41 assists. Hailie Wilds led the defense with 25 kids and a pair of aces.

Freshman Nissa Johnson had a big game with seven kills and seven block points. She tallied two solo blocks and 10 block assists. Megan Johnson had seven block assists.
