N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Valley City took The West Fargo Aces to extra innings but came up short losing 4-3 in a loser’s out game of The Southeast Region Tournament in Wahpeton Friday. The Ace’s scored in the 3rd and added 2 more runs in the 5th to take a 3-0 advantage heading into the final inning.
Post 60’s rally began with 1 out. Drew Oberlander lined his second hit of the game and Sam Jenson was hit by a pitch. Jenson was taken out of the game because of injury and Matt Brandvold came in to run in his place. After a strike out Reese Huschka drew a 2 out walk to load the bases. Facing 2 strikes Justin Manson laced a double to right that cleared the bases and tied the game up at 3. In the bottom of the inning Briar Harvey struck out a pair of runners to help keep The Aces off the scoreboard.
Oberlander and Harvey reached in the 8th inning but were left stranded putting the bat back in the hands of West Fargo. Tyler Hanson doubled to left and Garret Lund walked with one out. Ryan Reynold lifted a ball to left field that become the second out but a defensive miscue in the relay throw allowed Hanson to move ahead 90 feet. With Carter Dodd at the plate a wild pitch rolled to the fence and the winning run scored ending the game and Valley City’s season.
Both starting pitchers pitched well but neither factored in the decision. Stephan Brooks went 5 1/3 innings, giving up 7 hits with 3 runs, a walk and strike out. West Fargo’s Chandler Buchert pitched 6 2/3. He scattered 5 hits while not allowing a run with a walk and strike out. Dustin Mertz was the winning pitcher. Harvey took the loss for Post 60.
Post 60 produced 6 hits. Oberlander was 2 for 4. Nate Rodriguez had a double with Sam Jenson and Dalton Ondracek collecting base hits. Carter Dodd and Tyler Hanson had RBIs for The Aces.
West Fargo will play another loser’s out game Saturday at 1pm facing Casselton.
