Rockford, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–Three time defending state class B champion Carrington started their quest for a 4-peat with a 10-0 win in the opening round of the Central Region tournament. Drew Page fired a three hit shutout over Hope-Finley and did not allow any walks or hit batters to pickup the mound victory. Page threw 53 total pitches (45 strikes) and struck out 4 batters. Payton Smith and Jayden Shipman led Carrington with 3 hits each. Jayden Rosenau and Kyle Leapaldt also added 2 hits each adding to the Post 25 14 hit attack. Carrington improved to 22-6 on the year and Hope-Finley dropped to 4-21 overall. Carrington will face Harwood Wednesday night at 6:30 in the quarterfinal round.
The Harwood Hogs (Post 297), the number five seed spotted the Black Sox of New Rockford (Post 30) a 5-0 lead after 4 innings before coming alive offensively. The Hogs scored 2 runs in the 5th, 6 runs in the 6th, and 1 more in the 7th to advance to the quarterfinals against top seeded Carrington. The Black Sox tallied 8 hits overall, Teddy Allmaras, Ben Makay, and Cole Myhre all had 2 hits for Post 30. The Black Sox did threaten in the 7th inning loading the bases but could not deliver the big hit and fell 9-5. The Hogs rapped out 14 hits, Isaac Huesig, Austin Ackerman, and Brady Ackerman all collected three hits to lead Post 297 to the victory. Starting pitcher Matt Peterson pitched all 7 innings to earn the victory. Peterson struck out 9 batters and did not allow any walks or hit batters. The Hogs committed 8 errors defensively in the game, but overcame many of them with the 9 strike outs from Peterson. Harwood improves to 9-11 overall and the Black Sox dropped to 10-11 overall.
Hillsboro-Central Valley (number 2 seed) held on for a 2-1 win over the 7th seeded Gardner Express. Gardner put 2 runners on in the final inning but couldn’t deliver a timely hit to tie or take the lead. H-CV improved to 20-8 overall and Gardner dropped to 2-16.
Third seeded Mayville-Portland played catchup the entire game and finally took the lead in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Kidder County 10-9. Kidder built a 4-0 lead and didn’t trail until the sixth inning. Mayville-Portland improved to 14-8 overall and Kidder County dropped to 7-18.
Loser out games will start at 11:00 with Gardner squaring off against Kidder County and at 1:30 Hope-Finley will take on New Rockford. Quarterfinal games will be at 4:00 and 6:30 with Hillsboro-CV matching up with rival Mayville-Portland first and Carrington versus Harwood in the nightcap.
