(NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Council on Monday approved a resolution authorizing the city administrator to submit a grant request to the North Dakota Department of Transportation on behalf of Jamestown Taxi Service.

Jamestown Taxi Service annually receives funds from the grant assistance program and State Aid for Public Transit. The grant money covers 50 percent of the company’s losses, and must be submitted for through the city.

Mayor Katie Andersen said she was uncomfortable with the request, saying since there is now a second taxi company in town – Last Leg Taxi – that the community has proven it can support a taxi service and there should be no need for a government subsidy. Councilman Ramone Gumke also raised concerns about the amount of staff time the grant request takes.

The commissioners approved the resolution on a 5-0 vote, but wanted it communicated to Jamestown Taxi Service that the request may be denied in future years.
