LAKE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) continues to work with the North Dakota Army National Guard’s Camp Grafton on the response and cleanup of the diesel fuel spill.

The spill occurred on Tuesday, May 16, at the camp, located approximately 6 miles south of Devils Lake in Ramsey County. Initial estimates indicated approximately 1,286 gallons of diesel fuel were released, with about 500 gallons of that volume migrating through the camp’s storm drain into Devils Lake.

Assessments conducted on Devils Lake the afternoon of Thursday, May 18, did not identify any areas of diesel fuel or sheen on the lake. The diesel fuel that was present earlier has likely broken up and dissipated due to wind and wave action. The storm drain has been isolated and the cleanup is essentially complete; however, it will continue to be monitored.

Due to the timely response, impacts appear to have been limited to the area adjacent to the storm water outfall. Fishing and recreation on the lake has not been affected.
