S.D. (VCSUVikings.com)-  The Valley City State track & field team recorded nine Top 5 finishes on Thursday as a handful of athletes competed at the Northern State Twilight Meet in Aberdeen, S.D.

Thursday’s small squad was mainly throwers as the Vikings had eight Top 5 finishes in the throwing events. VCSU will bring its full team to Dickinson on Friday for the Blue Hawk Games.

Viking sophomore Seri Geisler won the women’s javelin by more than 40 feet Thursday. The VCSU sophomore recorded a season-best throw of 51.16 meters, which broke her own meet and facility records that she set last spring at the NSU Twilight Meet. Geisler’s mark of 51.16 meters is the top throw in the NAIA this season, and was just slightly off her national championship and school record throw from last season (51.37 meters).

Viking freshman Garret Roemmich popped off a career-best throw of 52.14 meters in the men’s javelin, placing second overall. Roemmich’s career-best throw entering the meet was 50.34 meters, which he surpassed on four out of his six throws Thursday. Roemmich led the men’s team with his javelin title and a fifth-place finish in discus. Ellwood Ellenson had a career-best throw in the javelin as he placed fourth with a mark of 46.61 meters. Martin Mena added a third-place finish in the 1500 meter run.

On the women’s side, Geisler backed up her javelin title with a third-place finish in the women’s shot put. Sophomore thrower Mackenzie Huber had a strong double as well, placed second in the women’s shot put and third in the discus. Marilyn Quintero added a fifth-place finish in women’s discus.

Up next: Valley City State will bring its full team to the Blue Hawk Games on Friday in Dickinson.
