“Jerry” Norberg, 89, of Valley City, ND died April 7, 2017 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND, after a recent illness. A funeral will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 18, 2017, with a viewing on Monday evening at the church from 5-7 PM and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. A second funeral service will be held at 3:30 PM, Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Butte, ND with interment at the Butte Cemetery.
Gerald Patrick Norberg was born on March 17, 1928 in Drake, ND to George and Tillie Norberg of rural Butte, ND. He first attended a one room schoolhouse, then at Butte High School, where he graduated in 1945. After a year at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, Jerry enlisted in the US Army, serving in Korea from 1946-1948. Following his discharge, Jerry attended Minot State Teachers College and graduated in 1951. He married Lila Skorick of Butte, ND on June 3, 1952, and they raised three children: Garth, Gail, and Gregory. Jerry began his long career in education, working at Butte, Alexander, Rolla, and Stanley Public Schools. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in 1954 and his Doctorate’s Degree in Education in 1969. Jerry was a professor in the education department at Valley City State University from 1969-1991, when he retired. On September 11, 1999, Lila Norberg died from cancer; Jerry married Arlene Fedorenko of Butte on August 2, 2001. Arlene died on September 24, 2015. Jerry was a resident at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City from October 2015 until his death.
Jerry was an avid gardener all his life, and he also enjoyed fishing, hunting and reading. He and Arlene enjoyed gardening and traveling. Jerry was active in the Lion’s Club, was a volunteer in Gateway to Fishing with the ND Game and Fish Department, a volunteer at Norsk Høstfest, and a 60 year member of the American Legion.
Jerry is survived by his children: Garth (Roberta), Eagan, MN and Gail Hemmer, Valley City; grandchildren: Scott (Stephanie) Hemmer, Woodbury, MN, Jared Norberg, Eagan, MN, Mason (Yanna) Norberg, St. Paul, MN, Linzy (Dan) Funk, Ellsworth, WI, Ariel (Brandon) Strohfus, Hazel, SD, Sadie Norberg, West Fargo, ND, Ethan Norberg, Lakeville, MN, and Savannah Norberg, Dickinson, ND; great grandchildren: Ava Hemmer, Harper Strohfus, Norah Strohfus, Ella Hemmer, Daniel Funk III, and Zoey Funk; siblings: Clarence (Margaret) Norberg, Palm Coast, FL, Richard Norberg, Lisbon, ND, Eunice Teyler, Alamosa, CO, sisters-in-law: Lena Norberg, Killdeer, ND, and Carol Skorick, Minot, ND.
In addition to his own family, Jerry enjoyed spending time with Arlene’s family. Children: Pam (Mike) Hoffman, Paulette (Dorvin) Froseth, Jay Fedorenko, and Melissa Fedorenko; grandchildren: Chris (Stephanie) Hoffman, Virginia Hoffman, Jordan (Kela) Lemer, Jessica Lemer, Spencer (Madison) Lemer, Ashley Fedorenko, and Taylor Fedorenko; great grandchildren: Macie and Kennedy Hoffman, Cora Lemer, and Karis Lemer.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lila; wife, Arlene; sister, Marjorie McBeth; brothers, Arnold, Glenn, Floyd, Dale, and Earl; son-in-law, Jay Hemmer; and son, Gregory.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made to the VCSU Foundation for the Gerald Norberg and Dean Hall Elementary Education Scholarship.
