N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Public School Board met in regular session Monday, March 20th.

During the meeting, Judge Thomas Merrick was recognized for his service to the students in the Jamestown Public School District. Board member Bob Toso reported on Judge Merrick’s work with the school’s and drug court.

Several students were also recognized for Winter Activities. Rachel Schiele received State Champion on the Beam, Connor Fuchs and Matt Schneider were recognized for All-State Boy’s Hockey, Haley Hillstrom for All-State Girl’s Hockey, and Jonas Flann for All-State Boy’s Swim/Dive 2nd Team.

Later in the meeting, Rob Schwarz of RSP and Associates presented his enrollment projections report. Schwarz had provided an enrollment forecast for the district before several years ago and spent part of the meeting updating the board on their latest projections.

Schwarz focused on enrollments, school capacity, and what’s happening with development. Schwarz says development will be changing in the next five years. Schwarz also made reference to future building projects for the schools in his findings.

Schwarz says the board will want to look forward to opportunities such as the Soybean Plant or University expansions for their own growth. Superintendent Robert Lech pointed out that stable numbers with small growth was a positive for the school district.

Later in the meeting, the board discussed Pingree-Buchanan School’s request to withdraw from the James Valley Career and Technology Center (JVCTC). Superintendent Lech stated that the agreement for all schools involved in the JVCTC put the Jamestown Public School Board as the operating board.

Pingree-Buchanan notified the school board March 8th of their intentions to withdraw. Lech stated that this would have changes on the JVCTC.

Lech reported that in the contract, the school needed to have the request in by March 1st in order to be removed from the program. The school’s posted their request was given March 8th, so Superintendent Lech recommended the board approve the request for the Pingree-Buchanan school’s to withdraw from the JVCTC in the 2018-19 school year.

Some school board members were disappointed in the school making the choice to leave the program. Jennifer Schmidt stated that she respects the school’s decision due to financial issues, but was worried for the students.

The motion was approved.
